The name itself is born of the basilisk, the mythical serpent king whose glance turned men to stone, and whose only cure was the scent of basil burned under moonlight.

Witches carried it in their satchels to guard against enchantment and betrayal. Fae were said to avoid it, unable to twist the will of those who wore it close.
